Silverlake Masters Swim Program | Get To Know The Coaches
My name is Scott Bavaro and I have been a US Masters Swimmer at Silverlake since the inception of the program.
I have enjoyed swimming throughout my life, but haven’t had any formalized training. Since joining the swim team, I have gotten more proficient on all 4 strokes, and have a love for breaststroke. I enjoy competition swimming and my events are typically the 200 and 100 breast, 100 and 50 free and 100 IM.
I am a certified Level 2 US Masters Swimming Coach and I am able to run / assist a US Masters Swim Clinic. Swimming is a technical sport, my goal in swimming is quality vs quantity.
As a competition swimmer, or maybe a triathloner or swim for fitness athlete, the goal is always to work more efficiently to achieve goals at hand. As a coach I am here to help achieve the goals of the swimmer at whatever swimming ability.
When I am not on pool deck, I like to spend time with my wife Jamie and our two children. I am a career firefighter paramedic for over 20 years and own my own CPR business.
I began swimming at a very young age. My brother had come home from morning swim practice with Taylor Mill Swim Club, and told me to come to practice the next morning because the team needed one more 8 and Under girl to make a relay. So, I did and l loved it. I spent the next two winters swimming at the Covington Y. The next winter I swam for the Northern Ky. Piranhas under Tim Cahill. The following summer, I tried out for the Cincinnati Pepsi Marlins at the prompting of Sy Flerlage. I swam for the Marlins many years and practiced alongside world record holders, American record holders and Olympians. It was the golden age of the Marlins.
At that time, women’s swimming scholarships for colleges were not as plentiful as they are today. Therefore, I turned to another passion: music. I finished my music degree at Butler University in Indianapolis, In. and began singing around town, in The May Festival Chorus, church and also in a professional ensemble called Vocal Arts Ensemble. I am now singing with Voices of the Commonwealth under the direction of Tony Burdette.
My hobbies also include cooking. I’ve taken a few culinary classes at the Mid West Culinary School in Cinti. Great fun! And, I love gardening. Daylilies and hydrangeas are among my favorites.
I have been swimming Masters since 2008. Once again, I turned to the Marlins and swam with them until that team dissolved. I then heard from Loretta Race who was beginning a Masters Swim Team at Silverlake The Family Place. I’ve been a part of the team ever since.
I’m excited to work with Scott Bavaro, our Head Coach who is a great guy and really has a passion for the sport.
My husband and I will celebrate our 38th anniversary in May. We have three wonderful adult children, one perfect grandchild and another on the way. We couldn’t be more excited and thankful.
